WILL BETTER GEAR AND GLOSSIER FINISH REALLY HELP ELEVATE THE PERCEPTION OF A BRAND?

Typically larger brands (like Nike, Apple, Jay-z,) have more to lose if they are not well represented. The potential spike in sales or loss in profits can be directly correlated to how their campaign is received. Other times it’s what customers or audiences expect to see on a regular basis - which is more know a video branding. Consistency is key if you’re a professional corporation or a successful local brand. Communicating who you are, what you represent and what you offer to current and potential customers often allow you to grow. Whether or not a video is successful comes down to these core variables: creative/concept, execution (which is the production company that creates the video) and the final content (how/and where people end up seeing the content).


 

HOW MUCH DOES IS COST TO CREATE A VIDEO?

Since the demand for video grows rapidly, we get asked this question all the time: “How much does a 2-min video cost?

 

Well, similarly like with planning an event or buying a car, there is no single answer. There are tens of components that come into play. We like to think of a video production as an orchestra. In order for it to be impressive and professional, it needs many instruments and thorough preparations. A high-quality video production is never a one-man project. The more high-end instruments are used and the more experienced players are hired, the better the outcome. For that reason, pricing and producing quality video is just like the saying “You get what you pay for.”

 

FIRSTLY, LET’S ELIMINATE THINGS THAT DO NOT IMPACT THE COST:

 

1. Duration. It hardly ever matters that a video is 1 minute or 3 minutes long. Unless it’s an animation or an interview that needs a lot of cuts, the work necessary to create an awesome video is not much affected by its expected duration.

2. Purpose. Whether it’s a branding, promotional, instructional, Kickstarter, or any other type of a video, typically it doesn’t determine the cost. (YES, Fields of use – If it’s a TV commercial or online streaming broadcast the content expectations, copyrights and purchased media may be 10x higher than any other video.

Short example:

30-second video of 30 actors in different cities getting on a plane and meeting in Alaska – is a whole different than a 3-minute video of two founders in their office speaking to a camera.

Even if the duration of video is the same, the cost associated to produce each example is dramatically different.

 

SO…

When thinking of a video, think of it as a project. Think of all the components needed to make the scenes and graphic elements come to life. The shorter and cheaper preparations, organization, logistics, the lower the cost of a video and vice versa. A well-prepared answer to “What would you like to be in the video?” usually allows for assessing an initial budget range. From there, it can be customized to your end goal.

VIDEO VS CINEMA QUALITY
To simplify the process we have defined our production category and price range accordingly. When we have our first meeting about production we have documents that break down in detail what you get for each budget range.

VIDEO PRODUCTION: Simple videos in nature where content is more important that the quality on screen. Typically these productions are useful for local / small businesses and brands in the budget range of $1,000 to $5,000. Less planning, logistics and organizing allows them to be cost effective and enable faster turnaround time. 

 

CINEMA PRODUCTION: Where brand representation and quality is of most importance. The same tools and productions strategy that are applied to making movies is scaled down to fit larger organisations with an established brand look,  feel and voice. OR brands that are looking to rapidly grow in market share and want to define themselves  

 

Great for: Web commercials, branding videos, story telling, documentaries, major startups or brand Revamps, product launches, social media campaigns.


 

BUDGETING

Every project has a specific budget, however, some budgets are larger than others. The video producer’s job is to make sure the production stays within budget. All components of the video project are mapped out during creative strategy and pre-production to determine a cost friendly course of action. Once you have planned for the basics you can begin to ask yourself whether or not your project needs a little extra polish. 

 

While lower budget productions have a very basic camera set up, higher budget productions typically have more moving parts. Things like additional crew members, specialized camera equipment, actors, gear and special effects are all extra costs. Overall, it depends on what you want to see on that screen and the complexity on which it will take to create the end result.

 

Up to $5k = Simple direct video production for local business

Up to $10k = Small businesses, companies w/ single person marketing departments

Up to $100k = Professional brands or large organizations


 

INVESTING WISELY

If you don’t know what you want to accomplish with your video, it is hard to justify spending those precious marketing dollars. Think about the goal you want to accomplish and keep that in mind. As you consider making the investment in video, include promotion and distribution strategy as part of your planning process. Developing a well thought out strategy will help you allocate your budget appropriately and set you up for a successful return on investment.

If you are smart about the way you market your video, you could gain access to a much wider audience. For example, if you have a large social media following, it may be worth asking for multiple short social media cuts optimized for mobile. Maybe you could use a few GIF clips to embed directly along with your next email campaign. You can even repurpose your video content for maximum long term return.
